Throw in a laugh or two and it helps.  Sounds simple?  Perhaps but not really.  It's hard.  If it were easy then everyone could do it. But if I can do it (a 58 year old post menopausal grandma with a history of back surgeries) then so can you.  

I was never an athlete growing up.

I was weak and uncoordinated.  By age 55 I had two surgeries and gained 30 unnecessary pounds.  But with a commitment to Unity Fitness and with the help of smart caring coaches, I have been able to go from 32% body fat in summer 2019 to maintaining 22% for the past 8 months.  I don't say that to brag but to encourage you that you can do it too. I'm 51 years old and I have been lifting weights, exercising and staying active much of my life. I read books and magazines to learn bits and pieces of a healthy lifestyle, but I never achieved the results I wanted to see and feel.

At my daughter's wedding (last year) I weighed more than I have ever had in my life; this is when I knew I needed a change.

Joining Unity Fitness has been a game changer for me in regards to my health and fitness.

My membership at prior gyms included attending cardio classes and using the cardio and weight machines 1-2 hours 5-7 times per week with minimal direction from a fitness professional.  My belief was that if I worked out 1-2 hours nearly every day, I would see improved strength and endurance.  Instead, there were injuries including shin splints, joint pain and more.

This all changed when I joined Unity Fitness four years ago.

When I came to Unity over 3 years ago, I was significantly overweight, had no idea what good nutrition was, and really had very little muscle mass. I started slow and really just tried to concentrate on movement and flexibility. I saw a little change in my weight, but wanted more.

I sat down with Jordan and looked at my food plan. Just because I didn't eat fast food or use a lot of prepackaged foods didn't mean that how I ate was healthy. It was a real eye opener. My focus switched to include adding more metabolic classes and food journals (a real but necessary pain) to my regime.

I learned to not pay so much attention to the total number on the scale, but instead to focus on the pieces of that number -water, muscle, and fat.

I started losing weight and adding muscle and in 2019 I was able to join my 3 boys on a 50 mile hike through the mountains to Machu Picchu.

I actually lost a few more pounds during the COVID lockdown in 2020 by tracking food and using the online workouts that Unity provided.

Fast forward to the end of 2020. I have lost almost 13 pounds of fat! I've also improved my muscle mass and my weight is down almost 25 pounds from my first weigh-in 3 years ago.

While I am not at my ideal weight yet, I have been able to maintain a steady weight and continue to improve muscle mass and fat loss over the last 12 months by finding balance between sleep, food plans, and workouts.

2021 will bring more challenges but with the help of Unity, the trainers, and a solid food plan I will continue down the path to a weight that is balanced and ideal for me.

In the past I had a negative association with the gym and fitness because it was “HARD WORK” and results took too long to happen. Until I came to Unity (something that would not have happened without the help of my wife Morgan) I would workout but never understood the level of dedication and “HARD WORK” that achieving fitness goals takes. 

Simply put very shortly into my time at Unity I learned what it takes to achieve fitness goals…

Three years ago while having a discussion with a Unity Fitness training coach about weight loss, he asked me this question.  “Do you want to lose weight or gain strength?”  Without hesitation, my answer, of course, was “gain strength”.

Since then, I have concentrated more on the nutrition needed to produce muscle growth and the timing of the intake of this nutrition.  My nutritional change was pretty simple by making sure that I always had a healthy breakfast, especially on training days, adding a protein smoothie after each training session, and trying to add more lean protein to each healthy meal.
